Ultimately, tourism depends on the environment and people. If there is anything the novel coronavirus has taught us, it is that the earth will fight back if we do not protect it. We must reimagine what sustainable tourism is. Communities of people are important, without that, there can be no travel and tourism. Tourism futures must take cognizance of the fact that the earth has enough to support everyone’s needs if we are sustainable, but not enough to support corporate greed.

There is a lot of uncertainty, and the future is unpredictable for the whole world. One thing we do know is that travel hospitality and tourism will never be the same again. It is time to ‘reinvent’ travel and tourism for the sake of the people and planet. Nature has given us a second chance to rethink our trajectory. Work and recreation must be restructured, and leisure reconfigured to prioritize wellbeing and equity and the long-term sustainability of the world rather than just profit and ambition.

ABOUT PEPIN ISLAND 875 CABLE BAY ROAD, NELSON, NELSON

Pepin is a unique property in New Zealand, if not the world: an entire private island, 1,280 acres, with easy road access 20 minutes drive from Nelson, a thriving NZ city with a national airport.

Pepin is an extraordinarily beautiful place that captivates visitors. It is its own spectacular landscape with rolling paddocks, native bush, sea, cliffs and beaches. Extensive tracks and paths around the island provide access to secluded beaches and coves rarely visited by people.

Pepin is a successful farm combining grazing, orchard, pine plantations and discrete, small scale tourism accommodation. The island carries approximately 1,900 sheep and 100 cattle, with the temperate climate and soil allowing all year grazing. There is abundant water with springs gravity-feeding water tanks and irrigation systems around the island. Regular testing has shown the water quality to be exceptionally pure.

Pepin has extensive accommodation for owners, tenants, and short-stay guests. The farmhouse is a traditional weatherboard home with seven bedrooms and there are three cottages nearby. Farm buildings include a woolshed, stockyards, multi-bay sheds, storerooms and shelters around the island.

There is a large orchard with a very wide variety of fruit trees, macadamia and olive trees, as well a small pine plantation nearing maturity. Almost all of the island is frost-free, providing a productive and long growing season.

Three eco-chalets on spectacular parts of the island are a chance to enjoy a night or two away from the world. These chalets are very popular with guests walking the island and experiencing the magic of Pepin.

Pepin is connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway with gated access, allowing you to come and go whenever you want. 1,280 acres/518Ha of private island, near a city and with easy access, Pepin is a very rare combination anywhere in the world.
