Ultimately, tourism depends on the environment and people. If there is anything the novel coronavirus has taught us, it is that the earth will fight back if we do not protect it. We must reimagine what sustainable tourism is. Communities of people are important, without that, there can be no travel and tourism. Tourism futures must take cognizance of the fact that the earth has enough to support everyone’s needs if we are sustainable, but not enough to support corporate greed.

There is a lot of uncertainty, and the future is unpredictable for the whole world. One thing we do know is that travel hospitality and tourism will never be the same again. It is time to ‘reinvent’ travel and tourism for the sake of the people and planet. Nature has given us a second chance to rethink our trajectory. Work and recreation must be restructured, and leisure reconfigured to prioritize wellbeing and equity and the long-term sustainability of the world rather than just profit and ambition.

Sustainable and off-the-grid private island resort.

The photos here below are from "Le Pirate Island", an off-the-grid eco-resort in Flores, Indonesia, a good example of low-impact sustainable resort.

This is what they state on their website:
We invite you to set sail on a journey where you will be encouraged to refrains from using electronic devices in your very own Private Island.
Paradise found, the ultimate escape, step outside of your Beach Hut and dive into the crystal clear waters, swim with all kinds of sea life right at your doorstep, meet new people, share experiences, sleep under the stars and go home wanting more.
“Le Pirate Island has limited comfort and facilities due to its location and logistics challenges. Water and supplies are brought daily from the mainland, and electricity is harvested from the sun. The 3G connection is unreliable. Our staff will do their best to assist you during your stay, however, we remind you that Le Pirate Island may not suit every traveler’s expectation”.

Another good reference in Raja Ampat:

Their concept and approach to sustainability is what I'd just copy and paste for my project.

Maldives, an outdated and unsustainable model.

"The only positive way to approach the crisis may be to view it as a time to pause, reflect – and reboot the way that travel works."

"The global downturn has revealed the worrying extent of over-capacity in travel. Airlines and hotels have vast capacities to fill, and the default way of doing so is to drop rates."

"Social distancing has altered the lifestyle balance, and the way people interact on a daily basis. For example, staying at home and not traveling may make consumers more attuned to their own health and wellness. This focus on wellbeing could create new behavioral drivers, especially for dining, spa experiences and health tourism. "

"It's hard to foresee, but I think that adventure travel will actually be positioned well as small group travel that avoids crowds and enclosed spaces. It’s travel that takes people deep into nature and keeps them active and healthy. Domestic travel will certainly benefit from this situation now and in the future and luxury travel will probably spend a lot of effort promoting the safety and security of their offerings. Exclusivity will probably be sexy again since it implies fewer people involved."

"...mass travelers will be very cautious to get back to traveling while passionate or niche verticals like adventure, culinary, spiritual – those will come back first."

"The health crisis we are experiencing is dramatic, and the economic crisis will be just as dramatic, and particularly for the tourism sector."

"Since we are talking about trends to consolidate, creative tourism can undoubtedly help restart tourism. Indeed, since its theorization, it has grown considerably by responding on the one hand, to the demand of travelers in search of meaning and authenticity, and of on the other hand, as a solution for destinations wishing to make tourism, a lever of sustainable development for their territory. The current context is precisely highlighting a return of human values and solidarity within society."

"It is also important to emphasize that in this development, consumers, in this case, tourists, have become “prosumers”, by participating in the co-creation of their own experiences, and it is therefore impossible to relegate them again to mere customer status. The Maslow pyramid is evolving, and tourism with it!"
